Ruakuri Cave – Visitor Information and Risk Disclosure
Ruakuri Cave – Visitor Information and Risk Disclosure
The innovative design of the Ruakuri Cave walkways makes this one of the most accessible and safe ways to experience a unique cave environment and enjoy the beauty of glowworms.
As with all natural environments, there are some risks to be aware of when visiting a cave. These are carefully managed, but it is important that visitors understand them before entering.
Cave Environment
- The cave has elevated walkways, handrails, narrow passages, and limited visibility in some areas.
- Conditions are typically cool (around 15 °C) and damp, with water dripping from the ceiling at times.
- Visitors will walk over 1 km during the tour, including a descent and ascent of around 50 metres.
- The tour follows a slow walking pace with regular stops for safety and to take in the cave features.
- To reach the entrance, visitors must cross a road and walk down an unsealed driveway.
- Backpacks are not permitted in the cave without prior approval of cave staff.
- Photography is encouraged in some areas of the tour - please listen to your guide and respect the no photography areas.
- Camera equipment must be compact and contained. Tripods and other accessories are not permitted unless prior approval given by cave staff. Ask about our designated photography tours.
- At the lowest point of the cave the ceiling is approximately 130cm high, so visitors will be required to bend or duck for a short distance while the roof is low.
- Wheelchairs and pushchairs are welcome but are limited to a maximum width of 65cm and height 130cm. The walkway gradient is no more than 1:10.
Natural Hazards
- Earthquakes: While rare, significant earthquakes could cause damage to cave structures, roads, or surrounding land.
- Rockfall: Loose rocks, formations, or small sections of ceiling could fall unexpectedly. To reduce this risk, the cave is regularly inspected and monitored.
- Flooding: Heavy rain can increase water levels, making roads or walkways slippery or impassable. Weather and water levels are constantly monitored, and tours may be rescheduled or cancelled if necessary.
Personal Considerations
- The confined nature of some cave passages may cause discomfort, panic, or anxiety for some visitors.
- In the unlikely event of an emergency, evacuation can take extra time due to the layout of the cave.
- Visitors with health concerns (e.g. mobility issues, respiratory or heart conditions, or claustrophobia) should discuss these with staff before entering.
Travelling with Tamariki (Children)
- For safety, preferred methods of care are pushchairs, front carriers, or holding an adult’s hand.
- Child carriers worn on the back are not permitted inside the cave without prior approval from cave staff.
- Children must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Safety Measures and Your Role
- All tours are led by experienced guides dedicated to your safety and enjoyment.
- Please follow your guide's instructions, stay with your group, and remain on designated walkways at all times.
- If you feel unwell or uncomfortable at any stage, please let your guide know immediately.
By being aware of these conditions and following your guide’s instructions, you can safely enjoy the remarkable beauty and atmosphere of Ruakuri Cave.
