Waitomo Glowworm Caves & Ruakuri Cave

Descend into the magical Waitomo Glowworm Caves and glide by boat under a galaxy of glowworms before heading to ancient Ruakuri Cave, a spectacular cave full of legends and tales. Walk amongst magnificent cave formations formed over millions of years and see sparkling glowworms up-close.

Mt Ruapehu Sky Waka Gondola

NZ’s largest and most technically advanced gondola. Situated within the dual world heritage Tongariro National Park, Sky Waka travels 1.8kms through one of the North Island’s most rugged and spectacular landscapes on Whakapapa, Mt Ruapehu.

The Logistics: The drive between Waitomo and Whakapapa, home to Sky Waka gondola takes approximately 2 hours through a beautiful rural New Zealand countryside. This self-drive combo can be done in either order and spread across different days, giving you plenty of time to experience both regions and all activities on offer at your own pace.

Allow 45 minutes for the Waitomo Glowworm Cave and 1.5 hours for Ruakuri Cave.

  • How can I confirm my tour bookings if I am confused?

  • What do I need to bring on the tour?

    All you will need are comfortable shoes, a warm jacket, and a camera for Ruakuri Cave.

  • How many people can go on each boat tour?

    There are 23 people or under on each boat tour.

  • How long is each tour?

    Allow 45 minutes for the Waitomo Glowworm Cave and 1.5 hours for Ruakuri Cave.

  • Are kids free?

    Under 4 year olds go free, but they must be booked to secure a place on the tour.

  • Can I include a child aged over 14 as a child in a family pass?

    No you can not, you will need to book them as an adult. Proof of age may be required.

  • What is the check-in time and location?

    Waitomo Glowworm Cave tours depart daily from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre, located at 39 Waitomo Village Rd. You will then self-drive to the Ruakuri Visitor Centre on Tumutumu Rd, 5 minutes away. Check in 30 minutes prior to your first tour departure.

  • Can you take photos or video this tour?

    Photography and video are not permitted inside the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, but is allowed in Ruakuri Cave.

  • What does a family pass consist of?

    Two adults and two children.

  • What is the temperature inside the caves?

    16-17 ºC year round
