Nau mai, haere mai and welcome to the inaugural Matariki ki Waitomo celebrations at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.

Experience the Matariki story and enrich your knowledge with a magical week of Matariki celebrations, as we celebrate the theme of rebirth. Immerse yourself in the stories of the stars, the glowworms and the cultural history, and visit Waitomo for a tour, workshop or special event. With themed kai, kōrero, music performances and more, there’s something for everyone.

Matariki Evening Event | 2 July, 4:00-6:30pm

Head underground into the majestic Waitomo Glowworm Caves for a special one-night-only evening of music and dining to celebrate Matariki - with a powhiri, a delicious meal, a concert in the caves, and a twilight glowworm tour.


Rongoā Education Series | 25 June & 2 July, 10am

Develop a deeper understanding of Maori rongoā (traditional medicine). This interactive workshop will be centred around the KawaKawa plant and explore the various internal application to assist in the reinstatement of wellness.

Twilight Matariki Glowworm Cave Tour | 25 - 26 June, 4:00pm

Join us for the opening evening of our celebrations with a magical twilight cave tour. Be greeted with a traditional powhiri on arrival followed by kawakawa tea and a treat, before embarking on a one-of-kind tour through the glowworm caves at night.


Te Reo Māori Immersion Glowworm Cave Tour | 27 June at 10:30am

Have the full glowworm cave experience entirely spoken in Te Reo Māori, led by direct descendants of the cave’s original explorers. This is a must-do for all Te Reo speakers. Book by selecting the date and time in the calendar.

Bilingual Glowworm Cave Tour | 28 June & 30 June at 10:30am

If you're just starting out or have some knowledge of Te Reo Māori, come along to our bilingual tour. This experience will involve a guided walk through the caves, with key elements of the tour delivered in Te Reo Māori and English, followed by the quintessential boat ride underneath the glowworm canopy. Kaimahi for Nature Korero | 29 June, 12pm | Free

Pop into the Waitomo Caves for a free korero (talk) about the ‘Kaimahi for Nature’ programme, a collaboration with DOC, Discover Waitomo, iwi and hapu that has taught new knowledge and skills to our workforce, and enriched the community.


Kai | 24 June - 3 July | Waitomo Homestead

Enjoy a Matariki twist on Waitomo Homestead’s famous pies – feast on a hangi pie or boil-up pie, or try a special paua dish on the menu all week long.
