Tours depart from 9.30am. 

Allow 45 minutes for the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, 1.5 hours for Ruakuri Cave and 1 hour for Aranui Cave.

Check in 30 minutes prior to tour departure.

The Waitomo Glowworm Cave is accessible to those with reasonable mobility, with good handrails and paths. Please note: the Waitomo Glowworm Cave does not have wheelchair access. However Ruakuri Cave has full wheelchair and pushchair access.

Photography and video are permitted in selected areas of Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave so bring your camera. Please do not touch formations. They are easily discoloured by people touching them and the more fragile formations can break. Please help us protect the beauty of the cave.


  • How can I confirm my tour bookings if I am confused?

    If you are confused about a certain tour time, you can confirm your bookings and times by phoning the contact centre on 0800 456 922.

  • What do I need to bring on the tour?

    All you will need are comfortable shoes, a warm jacket, and a camera for Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave.

  • How many people can go on each boat tour?

    There are 23 people or under on each boat tour.

  • How long is each tour?

    Allow 45 minutes for the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, 1.5 hours for Ruakuri Cave and 1 hour for Aranui Cave.

  • Are kids free?

    Under 4 year olds go free, but they must be booked to secure a place on the tour.

  • Can I include a child aged over 14 as a child in a family pass?

    No you can not, you will need to book them as an adult. Proof of age may be required.

  • What is the check-in time and location?

    Waitomo Glowworm Cave tours depart from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre, located at 39 Waitomo Village Rd. You will then self-drive to the Ruakuri Visitor Centre, located at the top car park on Tumutumu Rd, and Aranui Cave in the bottom carpark, both are just 5 minutes from the visitor centre. Check in 30 minutes prior to your first tour departure.

  • Can you take photos or video this tour?

    Photography and video are not permitted inside the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, but is allowed in Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave.

  • What does a family pass consist of?

    Two adults and two children.

  • What is the temperature inside the caves?

    16-17 ºC year round
