Black Water Rafting: Thrills with Safety

Blackwater rafting is an exhilarating adventure that takes you underground to explore the Ruakuri Cave system. You’ll navigate waterways in the dark, jump off waterfalls, and float under a sky of glowworms. While immensely fun, it's essential to be aware of some health and safety considerations before you embark on your underground adventure. The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company has been welcoming guests since 1989, and the safety, security, and enjoyment of our guests is our number one priority. We follow a strict protocol of safety procedures and adhere to guidelines in accordance with national and international safety standards. Our guides, equipment, and safety procedures are continuously assessed.

Please watch the below Safety Video before booking your Black Water Rafting Adventure.

Know Before You Go:

  • Fitness: Blackwater rafting involves uneven terrain, climbing, and swimming in potentially cold water. A moderate to good level of fitness is required. Note that you’ll be in an environment that involves risks. We recommend that you can easily climb and descend a flight of steep stairs; if you have concerns about the level of fitness needed, please call, or email the team to discuss them.

  • Health: If you have any pre-existing health conditions, including, knee or ankle issues, heart problems, asthma, or significant back or neck issues, consult your doctor before booking a black water rafting trip.

  • Swimming ability: While wetsuits and a Blackwater Rafting tube will provide buoyancy, basic swimming ability and water confidence is recommended for blackwater rafting. You'll be navigating water passages, and you’ll feel more comfortable if you're familiar with the water.

Safety Measures:

  • Experienced Guides: The Legendary Blackwater Rafting company only employ highly trained guides who prioritise safety. They'll provide comprehensive briefings on safety procedures and proper equipment use.

  • Provided Gear: We will provide you with all the necessary gear, including helmets with headlights, wetsuits, and boots. Please bring swimwear to wear underneath your wetsuit, a towel, and anything you need for a warm shower afterwards.

What to Bring:

  • Towel and Warm Clothes: You'll likely be wet and cold after your adventure. Bring a towel and warm clothes to change into afterwards.

General Safety Tips:

  • Listen to your guides' instructions and follow the safety information outlined throughout the trip.

  • Take things slow, you’ll be walking in water and on the uneven surface of the cave floor.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and watch your head.

  • If you fall out of your tube, don’t worry; lay on your back and lift your feet up. Your wetsuit will provide buoyancy.

  • Communicate any concerns or difficulties to your guide immediately.

By following these tips and your guides' instructions, you can ensure a safe and unforgettable blackwater rafting experience!
